Ancient lost ‘Lion City’ DISCOVERED at bottom of eerie lake in China

A maze of white temples, memorial arches, paved roads, and houses… hidden 130 feet underwater: this is China’s real-life Atlantis.

The so-called Lion City, tucked in a lake between the Five Lion Mountain, was once Shi Cheng – the center of politics and economics in the eastern province of Zhejiang.

But in 1959, the Chinese government decided a new hydroelectric power station was required – so built a man-made lake.

(a)The valley was flooded in 1959 to create the lake for the Xin’an River Dam project. At the foot of Wu Shi Mountain (or “Five Lion” Mountain) lies an ancient city known as Shi Cheng (“Lion City”). It was built during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 – 200) and was first set up as a county in AD 208.

This city acquired the name “Shi Cheng” from nearby Wu Shi Mountain, which is located just behind the city. At present Shi Cheng remains undisturbed at a depth of 26-40m. Big Blue, a dive operator based in Shanghai, runs year-round weekend trips twice a month to Qiandao Lake and has begun exploration of this submerged city.

Qiandao Lake is a man-made lake located in Chun’an County, formed after the completion of the Xin’an River hydroelectric station in 1959.

The city was once the center of politics, economics, and culture of Sui’an County in that area.

According to the restored map of Shicheng, there were five city gates in all directions. You can find one city gate tower on each city gate and altogether there are five towers. Besides, six streets in Shicheng City were used to connect every corner of the city as a whole.

The typical roads in Shicheng City were stone roads, tidily paved by flagstone and pebbles.

Qiu Feng, a local official in charge of tourism, introduced the idea of using Shi Cheng as a destination for diving clubs.

The first voyage was one of discovery, and Qui said: “We were lucky. As soon as we dived into the lake, we found the outside wall of the town and even picked up a brick to prove it.”(a)

Now the city has attracted interest from archaeologists and a film crew has been on site to record the preservation of the lost ruins.(a)

China’s Atlantis –  A Chinese city, forgotten after it was flooded when the government built a dam that turned the valley it was in into a lake, has resurfaced as an underwater adventure park for tourists.

The ancient city of Shi Cheng was also known as the Lion City because it was located in the province of Zhejiang, where it was surrounded by the five Lion Mountains.

(a)Founded over 1,300 years ago, it vanished from view 53 years ago when the Chinese government decided they needed a new hydroelectric power station. A dam was built to create a man-made lake, and as the water rose, the city was left at the bottom of this new found body of water.

Now the city had attracted interest from archaeologists and a film crew has been on site to record the preservation of the lost ruins.
